  Those two things really don't work together.  Then each and every object 
will have to either call the base class or implement "user settable" 
themselves.  If you will want this, we need the existing implementation.  
Andrew's patch can be adapted to use that mechanism instead.

  Remember that we're trying to clean this code up so we can make it 
pluggable...
