after a more detailed look, it seems like we only need to modify readField.  
If the requested field is not found, I think we can set _dataLine to the 
startframe and then call fieldListFor (which should then seek to the desired 
line before reading the available columns).  

I'll play with this some more and send a proposed patch to the list.
