I'd say that the available/selected approach is better in the long run, but in the short term we could live with the extra column. The extra clicks sound acceptable to me considering the improvements they buy.
As for real estate, it seems clear that we'd need to move the other options to another page, but I'm pretty sure we could find a way to fit all that into 800x600.
