That's fine- consider this a "proposal for the future" then.  I just wanted to 
propose what I think is a clean interface for generalized rendering.  I also 
wanted to try to go through every detail of the implementation, in order to 
show:

1.  That the interface to the rendering class is well defined.
2.  That this is a tractable problem, but one which requires significant code 
changes.

In the mean time, I'll try to get the healpix datasource finalized by 1.2 (for 
cartesian-only plots).
