SVN commit 483055 by staikos:

remove a whackload of virtual function calls from various functions that
appeared in the past year.  Factored out some redundant tests, and fixed a
FIXME where some code needed to be converted to a switch().  Added guards on
setters to avoid setting dirty when unneeded.
