Continuing diagnosis, here is what happens:
Click on P0 to close the menu causes a click event on the plot
Click event triggers zoom paused
Then the paint event arrives
   -> zoom paused causes paint in the plot to bail out
Release event undoes zoom paused
Next repaint will correct things
