I would gladly work on that if people would like, but considering that my code 
was originally declined, I obviously don't fully understand the technical 
requirements of the problem.  I also don't want to "add another cook to the 
kitchen" if there are enough already ;-)

It seems to me that dirfile support should read the FORMAT file and allow for 
different on-disk sizes of each field (a.k.a binary file).  There are many 
possible ways to treat different framerates:  interpolate to max SPF, have 
separate index for every field, etc.  

Anyway, as I said, I obviously don't understand the technical requirements 
here...
