I don't think that would be very common, but it could possibly happen in
some weird cases (like ignoring some curves in the autoscale
computation).

I think that could be *very useful* !

If legends start getting complex, maybe a specific dialog would help
unclutter the plot dialog. Currently, legends are attached to plots so
that it would be less consistent. But if you "break" that link a bit
with the previous proposal, then why not go the whole way to a specific
dialog...

I am not sure that this is required, as other view objects can be used
and grouped with the legend. Maybe an option to plot a frame around
object groups ?
