I don't know whether that makes sense here, but there can exist matrices
with dimensions > 3. Is that something we want to take into account ? I
am not familiar with that kind of manipulation, but I'd encourage you to
look at the netCDF interface, which has a concept of multi-dimensional
matrices and "slices". Since netCDF is probably one of the datasources
we'll want to "upgrade" to support matrices, it probably makes sense to
look at the API to see whether it is consistent with the methods planned
for datasources...
