Could you provide more details on your last comment. The default colour for the grid lines is chosen to be the foreground color of the plot (which is typically black, but can be changed).
If I uncheck the default box, select a new color (the original is going to be the default color), recheck the default, and then uncheck default again the colors I had last set are remembered. This is what I would expect to happen.
