Hmmm, what about user-controlled maximum memory useage?  For example, if I 
install the GIMP and run it the first time, it prompts me for the maximum 
amount of RAM to use for data.

Maybe we could have the default "max memory" value be set to something 
reasonable like half the physical RAM.  Then the "max memory" value could be 
changed under Settings --> Configure kst and stored 
in .kde/share/config/kstrc...

Of course, this would still require keeping track (at least approximately) of 
how much data vector memory has been allocated.

Just throwing ideas into the discussion...
