[Kst] Threading Branch

   While the locks are not all in place, most of them are now, and in 
particular most of the critical ones.  I think it is mostly safe to start 
testing the branch, and the regression tests now fully pass.  I would love 
any feedback of deadlocks or other weird behaviour in the branch.  Keep in 
mind that bugfixes are going into HEAD, not the branch, so you will see 
already-fixed bugs there.  I will not merge the branch into HEAD until I have 
some good feedback.
