Did you ever work in a typical office environment? It's "important" for the 
boss the be able to see the dates created by his secretary immediately :-) 
Seriously, the offline synchronization approach may be nice and easy 
technically, but it's confusion the average user. After all, Outlook is so 
popular because everything is happening automatically in the background, 
without any user interaction.
