Is 'mon' not a suitable monitor?  I have had absolutely zero problems with 
it, montioring everything from system and rack temperature to drive space, 
services like SMTP, POP3, PGSQL, RADIUS and SSH and even have written a 
small SNMP trap --> mon trap gateway to monitor things like routers and 
switches.  It's very very flexible.
