Wrong. In "old" imap mode (== online imap mode) only the headers of the 
messages are cached locally. Furthermore some index files are stored 
locally. But all mail remains on the server.

What happened is probably the following:
KMail 1.5 (from 3.1) killed the local copies of the disconnected imap 
folders. Then when KMail/Kroupware was started it thought that all 
folders had been deleted locally and therefore deleted all folders on 
the server during the synchronization.

One possible solution would be that KMail logs every action which is 
done locally to disc. imap folders. Only actions which are in the log 
should be performed on the server during synchronization. If the disc. 
imap folders are deleted locally by KMail 1.5 this deletion is not 
mentioned in the logs and therefore KMail/Kroupware wouldn't delete 
anything from the server.
