Which version of the client did you build?
Currently the CVS version of the kroupware-branch is the one
which is most stable.

It should be "Clear text", this is why I suspect that you don't have the latest 
client from CVS. :)

It should be okay to just build the packages. 
If that gives problems, it couold be a good idea to completely build KDE
with it.
