My problem in understanding was not "why must access from multiple 
clients be allowed?", but "why is disconnected IMAP neccessary to make 
concurrent access work?".
What I got as answers told me, that it isn't neccessary, but that the 
IMAP code in Kmail is not yet ready for this.
