It will work fine. Kolab uses IMAP and SMTP, which is Mozilla mail native 
protocol set.

KMail is nice. May not be an easy conversion for win32 API - not sure.

There are already several clones for outlook. Check on 
http://www.freshmeat.net and http://www.sf.net for likely candidates. Almost 
any of them would use IMAP and SMTP.

Please don't create another project for a mail user agent. Surely one of the 
existing projects could use some additional programming power?
