Jim:

Following this interesting discussion with enthusiam despite the fact that Im 
not a programmer (user) I understand that you may want to leave the subtasks 
issue to a later release. While this would limit the functionality of the 
application it may be necessary from a programming perspective. When the 
subtask issue does get addressed it may be relevant to review the dependancy 
issues. Ive attached some notes as to its importance and relationships. (hope 
thats OK if not please advise)

Essentially there are four types of tasks (there could be more)

Tasks that have no dependancies and that are not related to another task
Tasks that have no dependancies and that are related to another task 
(contribute to its completion)
Tasks that are indirectely dependant on other tasks and subtasks
Tasks that are directly dependant on other subtasks

The relationship between tasks (and subtasks) is the basis for all other 
calculations.
