Thanks for the prompts and suggestions.

Processing the index.xml file seems simple enough but presumably there 
is code already written to do all that that I can re-use? Hence my 
question about an API.

Looks like a bit of a learning curve but on the face of it a good approach.

I'm thinking more the latter. The idea is to write some code that 
chooses the next photo to display from the KPhotoAlbum collection 
according to various criteria, and would automatically incorporate new 
photos added to the collection.
