[KPhotoAlbum] Thumbnails missing with latest git

Sometime between 01/04 and 01/11, thumbnails stopped working -- the
thumbnail viewer has an empty grid.  I had to back out to 01/04.  This
happens whether I have incremental thumbnails enabled or not.

What is the purpose behind the incremental thumbnails?
