As far as I know this should work. I tested it out with a random Sony AVCHD
sample file I found from the net - and it works for me.

You need proper phonon backend to play the video files and appropriate
codecs installed. phonon-backend-gstreamer works for me on my Ubuntu 13.04
box. I do also have a bunch of codecs installed from medibuntu repositories
as well as the ones available from the official Ubuntu repositories. I do
not know any details for other Linux distros but it should work similarly.
You should also have mplayer2 installed...
