Seems that you use backtick as a starting character in output
quotation. Is this something the editor did?
echo "KPhotoalbum uses backend \`$BACKEND'..." >&2

Otherwise this looks fine, even though I did not test it out. My guess
is that the sqlite db file can be backed up the same way the index.xml
is backed up as it should be just one file. Backing it up should be
easy. However, I have never even tested the sql backend so I do not
know anything for sure.
