To me it doesn't sound intuitive at all that the selection depends on
the expansion of a folder. This is not how it works in file managers
and breaking the rule would not be easy for newcomers to learn.
Would it be possible to instead add a 'images in this folder' virtual
directory to each directory:

My holiday images
 - images in this folder
 - Helsinki
    -  images in this folder
    -  Seurasaari
    -  Center
 - London
    - images in this folder
    - Zoo
