 Correct (on both counts) and apologies for the confusion.

 a)  I meant KDE  (I thought the version numbers would be a giveaway)

 and

 b)  I've never before used any software as bug-ridden KDE 4.2


 It's unlikely that KPA would stop talking to one type of image file,
 and/or that KPA could have a bug like this that wouldn't have hit
 more people (we span quite a range of platforms, after all).

 So, yup, definitely try the system upgrade first.  Interestingly, I
 thought I'd experiment with kubuntu on a recent new install, but
 that idea lasted about three hours .. then back to a Debian netboot.
