For example browsing through my whole collection in the thumbnail
viewer I find some, say photos from a party or vacation or something
and I just want easily to see how many of them there are, for example
to be able to see if it's too many/little for a photo album (on paper
or web).

And for consistency: konqueror shows the number (and size) of selected files.
