I think that for just displaying EXIF there's no need to store the info
in the XML file... just go get it from the original image.  For actually
being able to search on EXIF data I think this would be too slow and it
would have to be in the XML.  But I don't think there's a need to import
every single EXIF tag (there can be dozens), just those the user has
decided to promote to a searchable field.

The bit about searching in a range is nice but much less important IMHO.
  Like I said I think the rest could be done with Perl; maybe I'll give
it a try and post an example script, or maybe someone will beat me to it.

I use the EXIF mostly to evaluate my *photography* rather than my
*images*.  Why is this particular picture bad?  Do I consistently get
sharp pictures with this lens?  Answering these questions helps me to
improve technically as a photographer.
