There are at least four front ends that I know of.  I could come up with other 
examples; it does happen.  However, it probably makes more sense to wait 
until a programmer comes along who is seriously interested in implementing an 
alternative front end.  I have a vague interest in implementing a 
Windows-based front end (for my wife) and a PHP-based front end (for my 
extended family), but they're way down on my list of priorities.

The real win with separation, though, would be if you could build a server to 
support multiple simultaneous clients.  That, however, is a lot more work 
than just separating front and back.  Fun work, IMO, but lots of it.
