I can confirm the same problem in KDE 4.4.3 in Fedora 12 (kde-redhat repos).

It seems to be a regression because I had no problem with the birthdays
resource in the KDE 4.3.x versions...
The KAddressBook seems to have changed since, so the issue may be there?
