This seems to be a global problem, perhaps with kwallet. This just started
happening to me with sftp sessions in KDE 4.4.x. Same symptoms but when opening
links in Dolphin.

The username and password are already filled in, but the "Remember password"
box is unchecked, even though I check it every time the prompt shows up.

This is HIGHLY annoying.
