Summary: Please remove modal propertiy of notification window
Product: korganizer
Version: 4.2.2
Platform: unspecified
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: wishlist
Priority: NOR
Component: general
AssignedTo: korganizer-devel at kde.org
ReportedBy: tpo_deb at sourcepole.ch
Version: 4.2.2 (using 4.2.2 (KDE 4.2.2), Kubuntu packages)
Compiler: cc
OS: Linux (x86_64) release 2.6.28-15-generic
Korganizer will pop up a modal notification window, when there's an important
date coming up.
The modal property of a GUI element will ensure, that the element will
*allways* stay on top of all other elements and thus allways use screen estate.
That means that in order to be able to use all of the screen estate
autonomously, the user will have to close or kill the application that uses
modal gui elements.
Visibility can be a useful feature to keep the user aware of some fact. It
clearly is for me.
So the solution here is not to force the visibility upon the user but let him
put the window wherever he feels like it serves him best with in workflow. The
user is however only able to do this, if the window is *not modal*.
Therefore, please remove the modal property of the notification windown. The
other option would be to make modality configurable, however I don't see any
necessity to *forcing* the user to close the notification window if he wants to
regain screen estate.
Thanks,
*t
PS: if there was a switch in Xorg to completely forbid all modal dialogs, I'd
use it at once.
