Probably you setup a Kopete shortcut, not a global shortcut. You can do that
using the instructions here https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=263559

As for the status message use the command

qdbus org.kde.kopete /Kopete org.kde.Kopete.setStatusMessage <message>
