Basically, I have a sony VAIO VGN-AR61M laptop, equipped with the following
webcam:

Bus 001 Device 002: ID 05ca:1839 Ricoh Co., Ltd Visual Communication Camera
VGP-VCC6 [R5U870]

I found a driver for it:

and it seems to work ok when using vlc:

(recognised as YUY2 format, 640x480)

but in kopete it doesn't work well:

This seems related to requested video resolution that should be set to 640x480:

I didn't find a way to set the resolution in kopete, and was redirected here
from the kde support forum (see ref link above).
