I have the same problem. Often, after pasting a link, I can only write in
underlined text after that. and often, the background color is set to black
from unknown reason. 

I use icq protocol, and there it is even worse, because, in icq no formatting
options are available/displayed. Only way to get rid of it, is deactivate
formatting.

by the way: I see no sense in an option to (de)activate formatting in icq, when
no formatting is available.
