I do not think that the newline (or any whitespace) on itself is breaking
standards compliance. The protocol forbids a few XML features (see RFC  3920,
section 11.1), but I can't find anything speaking against arbitrary whitespace
in the XML stream, which itself does not carry any semantics, and should be a
perfectly acceptable keepalive mechanism.

Also note that /the client/ is sending those newlines, and it is then /the
client/ which breaks the connection. The server does not show any behaviour
indicating an error state or provoking link termination.
