I have a packet capture of a connection that ends with the error after only
around 60 exchanged packets without any messaging activity. However, it's hard
to anonymize those traces. I tried to create a trash account on the same server
and captured for quite some time, but that connection never broke. I will keep
capturing that account and see if I can upload a trace.

The whole thing is not terribly interesting as I said before. After the
connection is established, the contact list and status are fetched from the
server, and the client (IIRC) just sends a single space character as part of
the XML stream, which is probably a keepalive.

The whole thing would be a lot easier if at least libiris did some visible
print debugging in the error conditions.
