I apologize for spamming this bugreport, but I wanted to add a couple things to
the workaround suggested above:

1. in Jaunty/KDE4.2 Kopete settings including the contactlist.xml are stored in
~/.kde/share/apps/kopete (not ~/kde4).

2. If you're like me and have no access to a Windows machine, you can always
start a virtual Windows instance at Amazon EC2.
