Could it be that there is some problem with the glib event loop? 
I read a blog a year ago where a KDE developer had had a problem with that.

By the way, the version info for kopete is:

kopete -v
Qt: 4.5.1
KDE: 4.2.3 (KDE 4.2.3)
Kopete: 0.70.2
