I can reproduce a similar problem related to yours. I think it is
plasma/knotify related
Steps:
chat with someone. 
Ask him to leave the chat and get back in a few seconds. 
Send him a message while it is offline. 
go to another window so the chat window looses focus. 
If the user enters the chat again. You get a "freezed" new notification for its
message
