I am also experiencing problems with kopete when connecting to Yahoo.  I use
FreeBSD 6.4, KDE4.1.4 built from ports, kopete 0.60.4.  Same error as noted
above: 17 - remote host closed connection.

I also have KDE 3.5.10 installed and its version of kopete 0.12.7.  This KDE3
version experiences no problems.  It works when using desktop 3.5.10.  And it
works when executed from desktop 4.1.4.  

On FreeBSD the KDE4 files are installed into /usr/local/kde4/ tree.  The KDE3
files are in /usr/local/ tree.  So in 4.1.4 konsole, I can execute
/usr/local/bin/kopete to run version 0.12.7.
