I'm experiencing the same behaviour on opensuse 11.1 with kopete 0.70.0 and kde
4.2.0.

I've had similar issues before and from what I remember the cause was my
contact list being too large. 

also, I've noticed that sometimes, when there are few people online in my
contact list I can connect just fine (tested late at night).
