I tried one more thing: I removed my original MSN account from kopete, to
remove  the possibility of any contact conflicts, but it still crashes when I
connect to the second account (though old contacts could perhaps theoretically
still be cached somewhere despite being deleted, so I guess a conflict is not
completely ruled out).

If any developer needs it for testing, I am willing to give them the
credentials to the problematic MSN account - I don't use it very much anyhow.
