Huh, I didn't realise I was adding to my own bug report.

Judging from the backtrace, this may be significant:

I added an MSN contact, and Kopete claimed that I was not on his contact list. 
However, that didn't stop me from chatting to him (he initiated the chat after
receiving notification that I had added him).
