I'm running into the exact same situation.  In the "About Kopete" screen, it
says I am running version 0.70.50, with KDE 4.2.70 (KDE 4.2.70 (KDE 4.3 >=
20090415)) "release 1.8".

Also, if I go into the Kopete settings for the chat window and change the
theme, the text rights itself when I click "apply".  After a few minutes, the
black-on-black returns.
