I am experiencing similar things, but I have a funny color scheme: bold white
text on lilac. So, things are somewhat different, and quite interesting:

1) I start with bold black text on lilac
2) then one backspace: white non-bold text on lilac
3) again backspace: white bold text on lilac

Interesting!

PS: MOST applications do not deal correctly with default white text :( Shame,
really.
