If I try to connect to a QQ (*not* ICQ) account, immediately after creating the
account on kopete I get status "unknown" (not online), and it is impossible to
connect. Starting kopete from the console gives the output below.

One of the lines reports "password is wrong" - which it is not, the same login
and password work with pidgin.

Among the output, I noticed the line

That link point to a page where one can download a client made by qq.com.

Once again, qq works fine with pidgin.
