There have been a couple of ways to fix this on the gentoo forums, one involves
updating the KDE3 version to 3.5.10 and the other involves adding an export to
/usr/bin/kde/4.1/bin/startkde.  I've added the export, but it requires
restarting KDe which I haven't done yet, but will do shortly.
