for the most part the MR i made for the patch on bug 126224 was to use
a MR on Gitorious, and not a request for a new patch

ffa78f4 is the patch i found on the bug report (complete with
whitespace errors). 9dbec1d contains fix for a bug the patch revealed
and some streamlining. i didn't build it as i ran out of time and
won't have any for at least another day

i put comments on both revisions, for instance the comment at ffa78f4
"calling getPreLength like this is weird {...}" is fixed in 9dbec1d in
by refactoring getPreLength
