Go to any IRC server that supports chan names starting with & (such as EFnet, Freenode..).  Do "/join &test".

You will see that the tab for the channel says "&&test" instead of "&test".

(BTW, only reason I saw this was because I use Bitlbee, which by default puts you in the chan &bitlbee.)
