Not sure if this is relevant, but there may be a correlation with the random crashes and the behavior>general setting, "input box expands with text".
Specifically, I believe I first experienced the random crashes when I turned the option OFF.  They were definitely a notable annoyance for a week or so.  For unrelated reasons, I turned it back ON last week, and I don't think I've had a crash since.
